Pakistan the First Place Winner of UNPSA Award
The United Nations Public Service Awards is the most prestigious international recognition of excellence in public service.  It rewards the creative achievements and contributions of public service institutions that lead to a more effective and responsive public administration in countries worldwide.  Through an annual competition, the UN Public Service Awards promotes the role, professionalism and visibility of public service. The Gender Unit Punjab (under the supervision of Mr. Tahir Manzoor) nominated “Gender Responsive Labour Inspection Toolkit” as their key initiative and best achievement of the year 2012. The project was designed, implemented and tested by the Gender Unit, Labour and Human Resource Department of Punjab (LHRDP).   The LHRDP’s initiative was the First Winner of 2013 United Nations Public Service Award, in the category of “Promoting Gender-Responsive Delivery of Public Services” for the initiative ”GRLI”. A delegation from LHRD was invite to attend the award ceremony in Manama, the Kingdom of Bahrain, from
 24 to 27 June 2013. The event was focused on the theme of “Transformative e-Government and Innovation: Creating a Better Future for All.  The event was organized by the Division for Public Administration and Development Management of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DPADM/UNDESA), UN-WOMEN, and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), in partnership with the Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain. Over 700 international and regional participants attended the event from 100 countries, including high-level United Nations officials and representatives of the Kingdom of Bahrain, as well as Heads of State and Government, ministers, senior government officials, mayors and representatives from civil society, academia, the private sector, and international and regional organizations. Over the course of four days, participants explored, discuss and shared knowledge about emerging issues and trends, good practices, as well as strategies and approaches related to e- government and innovation in public governance to achieve the United Nations development agenda.
As part of the Forum, a number of highly interactive events were organized, including plenary sessions, a Ministerial Round-Table, as well as parallel capacity-building workshops, and an Expert Group Meeting. The parallel workshops will focus on inter-related critical areas of public administration, namely:

  • Promoting Collaborative Governance through Innovation and ICTs organized by DPADM/UNDESA;
  • Transfer of Innovations for Improved Public Service Delivery in Least Developed Countries organized by DPADM/UNDESA;
  • Fostering Participation in the Context of the Post-2015 Development Agenda organized by UNESCWA/DPADM; and
  • Transforming Public Service Delivery to Advance Gender Equality organized by UN-WOMEN and
  • GCC Initiatives Towards eGovernance and Sustainable Public Services organized by the e- Government Authority of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Being the winner of the award Pakistan’s efforts were highly appreciated by the audience and participating countries.The runner-ups were provided UNPSA certificates where Pakistan was awarded the Certificate and a Shield for their best initiative.
